Sometimes it’s done with a sense of humor. (‘Shoes make me happy. I’m superficial. Whatever.’) Sometimes it doesn’t quite work. Or it comes ott as a bit of a shock. But then, it’s likely by design. The French have an interesting relationship with both English and those who speak it. New York is hot; Yankee hats, too. Bagels? We’ve stuck to baguettes. But l’amour is universal.
