Visiting the Markets of Provence

Markets, like this one in Cassis, define the cities and villages of Provence.

You can buy fresh vegtables and fruit (Aix-en-Provece),

and ready-cooked meals (L’Isle sur la Sorgue),

or bottled and canned goods. (Aix)

You’ll find flowers (Cassis),

finery (Aix),

and fashion (Aix).

Check ahead for what days the markets are held.

Aix has a daily vegtable market

at Place Richelme.

On Saturdays, you can buy just about anything there.

And the city holds a monthly book market.

Lourmarin’s market falls on Fridays.

There’s lots more than food.

The same is true of Cassis’ twice-weekly market.

Shop along the Sorgue on Sundays

Or stop by Marseille’s port for fresh fish.

Among Nice’s many markets is a flea market

where you can find just about anything

and local characters, too.

Markets usually open after 8

and disappear around noon, leaving the afternoon in the square to sunbathers and wine drinkers.
