Rachel Carson is known worldwide for her book ‘Silent Spring,’ which helped trigger the environmental movement.
Less known is her connection to Woods Hole, Mass., where
she fell in love with the sea as a young scientist
and worked at the Marine Biological Laboratories. .In 2013, a statue was installed in her memory
in Water Street Park, a tranquil place with its sculpture,
its piers
its gulls cruising for a snack,
its fishermen and the view
of the ferries shuttling to and from Martha’s Vineyard.
We sat there for an hour today, enjoying a pefect
October afternoon in what I hope will be one of my last weeks with crutches.
We were even treated to the drawbridge on the way home.
